Last night when I was setting my computer to record 30 Rock I saw that this week on PBS’s Independent Lense documentary series was When I Rise: Barbara Conrad Smith, explained thusly:
A gifted black opera student at the University of Texas is thrust into a civil rights storm that changes her life forever.
A.) Sadly, I had never heard the name Barbara Conrad Smith. B.) She’s fantastic. C.) How had I never heard the name Barbara Conrad Smith!!!!
Independent Lense is actually one of my favorite series. I first saw many of my favorite documentaries through PBS—Between the Folds and Helvetica being one that I have watched numerous times each. Needless to say, I took it’s being on “Independent Lense” as a giant stamp of approval.
The full video can be seen at this address, but ONLY until February 15th… so take an hour this weekend and watch this fascinating life story! DO IT!!!
COME! ON!
How could you not want to watch that! Those roadways and pastures they show are straight out of Houston County countryside—love it! Bonus: there’s a special guest appearance from crazy crazy Harry Belafonte!
