A Falling Through

After Clue, the next movie I usually force invite my friends to watch comes in the form of a wildly visually stunning fairy tale of sorts: The Fall. Just LOOK at these amazing stills, and the first three minutes alone (with a little help from the second movement of Beethoven's 7th) are, in my opinion, completely worth the rental fee.

I was going to try and write a synopsis of it, but just watch the trailer instead:

The director, Tarsem Singh, is mostly known for his television commercials but some of you might know his earlier forey to the silver screen, the 2000 Jennifer Lopez movie The Cell. Actually, it is exactly because of his abundant work on TV commercials that The Fall was even able to be made. Due to an extremely small budget (he financed the film himself in order to maintain his vision throughout) he managed to piggybacked on his other corporate jobs and carted the cast along with him to a total of some twenty different countries over a period of four years. Amazingly, the entire film is made without the use of computer generated effects-- a fact made even more astonishing when you see the final product!

The only mildly recognizable actor in the film is Lee Pace, whom you might remember from the sadly yet not surprisingly cancelled Pushing Daisies and the even lesser known gem Wonderfalls.  I'll refrain from getting on my high horse about how wonderful that show was... instead I'll let my sister-in-law do it here.

The standout of the film, however, is Cantica Untaru.  You will literally want to pull a Christian missionary in Haiti and steal this child from her home country of Romania. I wouldn't recommend it though because, you know, it's illegal and all. A complete unknown, Cantica's performance was a mixture of loosely scripted material mixed with improvised dialogue with the other actors. In fact, the entire cast and crew spent the whole shoot having her belive Lee Pace was actually wheel chair bound in order to get an untaintedly genuine performance. Welllllllllllll it worked.

Next up for Tarsem is Immortals, set during the time of Greek mythology.  Basically I couldn't be more excited because I went through a phase when I was younger where all I was interested in was mythology.  God bless Edith Hamilton!

So anyway... GO WATCH THE FALL!!

"Tarsem... has made a movie that you might want to see for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it."

So very very cool: a tablet of Alka-Seltzer being placed into a droplet of water onboard the International Space Station, along with commentary by one of the scientists.

Entr'acte: The European Tour

By the time this post goes up I will have landed in Paris and started out European tour!!!!!!  I thought this would be a fun time to reminisce and look at some of my favorite pictures from the semester I spent abroad living in Florence, Italy. Forgive me for how geographically schizophrenic the order of the pictures is!

My friends Meredith, Jamie and I in the market in Florence.  My apartment is the window directly to the right of the top of my head

Into the Woods

A reproduction of us at the beginning of the week.  Look how happy we are!

Intensive week is FINALLY over and holy mother am I exhausted. Getting up at 6 am and having nine hours of rehearsal a day with these kids just sucks the energy right out of ya, but it has been a wonderful time and both of our concerts went very well!! I have now officially sung my first Elijah and couldn't be happier about it.

Enjoy these pictures from the camp grounds.  You may notice that there aren't any campers in these pictures... we are (rightfully) contractually obligated to get written permission from the campers if we want to take/use their picture and I just don't haz the time or energy to deal with that.

Blue Lake?  I mean, I guess that's what this is... it's next to the campus so it must be, right?

P6130004
The "Beaux" Cabin, which I lived in for the week with another counselor and eight of the campers, is located in the Siena unit of cabins and lies in the "back 40" of the camp grounds.  Basically that means you have to walk a long ass way to get to the main campus

My little nook with my record player to keep out the insanity.  Interestingly enough, the round pillow you see is from the May rehearsal weekend.  I accidentally forgot to bring one from home and had twenty minutes to run to Walgreen's and find one at a nearby town.  Unfortunately the only pillow they had was a tiny tiny one for ten dollars.  Sabrina, the soprano soloist, was with me and was like: "Um, Joseph, I don't know if you'd be interested, but this dog bed is also only ten dollars and much bigger"  So..... I slept on a dog bed and let me tell you, at the end of a long day that shiz is com.for.tab.le!

Interested in losing a couple of pounds before some special occasion next week.  I highly recommend the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp diet... walk walk walk walk sing sing sing sing eat walk walk walk
Honestly, I have about enough sand in my shoes to build a one-month timer

Miller Theater, where the choir's a capella concert was held

Beautiful log-cabin chapel

This place is just ridiculous!  The "Rose" theater, a reproduction of an Elizabethan theater, where the theater group will present their Shakespeare plays

DON'T DO IT, JULIET!!!

A typical meal at Blue Lake.  I'm not sure if you know this, but potato salad goes with EVERY meal.  Sure, it looks delicious with a cheese burger, but imagine how great it tastes with tacos (!) and chinese food (!!) and basically anything edible :(

P6190030
Ellen, one of the counselors, and Emily, the mezzo soloist in Elijah

P6190032
Myself and Seth trying to act like we have the energy to live

P6170025
John, the tenor soloist, and Sabrina, the soprano soloist getting ready to build a campfire for the kids.  (With the general watching guard of course!)

The counselors at the end of the week.  Fifteen hours from when this picture was taken, the nine of us will be herding seventy-two choir members from western Michigan to Chicago O'Hare airport and on our way to Paris, Fuh-rance.  So as Jason Stackhouse would do, please pray to God, Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Allah, Confusion, Buddha, Scientology, aliens or that lion from Narnia to make sure that we all make it there with our sanity in tact

An interesting side-note for you all of you film buffs (and I do use that term rather loosely), the movie American Pie is based on Blue Lake Fine Arts camp but the directors refused to let them film anything on the campus.  So there ya go!

In which my character is tested

Since my friend Jan recently posted about Junior High, I figured you might enjoy these! I saw funnyexam.com mentioned on the most recent Graham Norton Show and thought that anyone who has ever given a test or taken a test (so you know, everyone) could appreciate it.  The site is a collection of exams, homework, detention slips, etc. that teachers and administrators have uploaded because of funny answers or drawings.

For my dad-- the PRESIDENT of the Texas Dental Association.  By the way... props to the teacher who gave the student +2!

Where's a good pair of parachute pants when you need them?

Ugh, there's nothing worse than a liberal, doe-eyed sea creature proselytizing about the abject horrors of Global Warming.  So instead of "my dog ate my homework" it's now "some walrus inhabited my homework"? Listen buddy, take your cockamamie hoo-haw science some other place besides my math assignment, ya hear???!!! (Speaking of homework... there is no way in hell I spelled "proselytizing" without having to do a little research of my own.  Yay dictionary.com for quick speling checks!)

For my brother, who probably has more hair than I do :(

For me?

For Kelley... THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!!!

And of course the best for lassssssst:

Oh puh-lease.  The "I actually work at Home Depot and I was selling the last snow shovel" is the oldest story in the book.

I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too

On May 29th my dear dear dear friends Janai Brugger and Javier Orman hopped a ride on that downward spiral known as marriage... and I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else than at their wedding that weekend!!!

A little back story: Janai got her Masters degree in voice at Michigan while I was finishing up mine/beginning my Specialist and we were quick to become close friends.  I believe this is how our first meeting went.

Me: Hi, you're names Janai, right?
Janai: Um, yes?
Me: K, thought so.  I'm Joseph.  We're going to go have lunch because I don't know if you know it, but we WILL be friends.

Honestly... that's almost word for word how it went.  Javier was here getting his degree in violin performance at the same time and blah blah blah they met, they fell in love, they now share a last name.

YAAAY!

Watching our friends Nicole and Lenora singing!

It's like a movie shoot up there

Why does Javier look like he's a bullfighter?  PAMPLONA IS NOT IN URAGUAY!!

Now, there was a picture of Janai and I from her wedding, but quite frankly it's not a good one of me.  Don't get me wrong, she looks great, but this is my blog after all and I can't have her taking all the focus!!!!!!!! So instead I found this picture of us "pre-Javier".

Tacky? Probably.  Will she get a kick out of it? Probably :)  Look how serious we look! I'm pretty sure we cracked up laughing right after it was taken

Next up for Janai and Javier is a big move from Charleston, South Carolina to the gold-digging gold-panning city of angels.  Mrs. Orman is headed to work for Placido Domingo at the Los Angeles Opera.  HOW COOL!!!!  You'd better get that music mem.o.rised NOW!
