Loveliest of Trees

The last Friday of April is set aside annually in celebration of National Arbor Day, a holiday which encourages the planting and caring for of trees and other foliage.  According to our good friend, Wikipedia, it originated in Nebraska during the early 1870's and has since spread to a global level.

What better way to celebrate the greenest of holidays with a vertically integrated product: trees make paper, photographs are printed on paper, photographs on paper look FABULOUS on your walls!  See the logic there?

So in honor of the 140th Arbor Day here is a small forests' worth of the photography world's best trees!

Pine-ing for any of these images?  Don't have a collection and looking for one to take root?  Already have one but looking to branch out?  Want me to stop with these ridiculous tree jokes? Don't be such a crabapple! Come into the John Cleary Gallery or give us a call and we'd love to help find that perfect photograph for you.

Hello, Goodbye

The beginning of June is bringing about lots of changes here at the John Cleary Gallery.  Henry Horenstein’s Show photos have come down to make way for Mitch Dobrowner’s Storm Series.  (Even though the opening has passed you can still catch the exhibit until the end of August!

You don’t have to go but you can’t stay here! (No seriously, we don’t have the storage)

At the close of tonight’s opening my tenure as assistant director of the gallery will officially come to a close.  I have enjoyed coming into this building every single day and being surrounded by such a fascinating range of photography for three months has been more than an amazing experience.

Let’s take a quick look back at the fun times, shall we?

Most of all, though, I am beyond appreciative to Catherine for the opportunity and the highlight of my experience was making such a fantastic friend in the process.  Now DO IT!!!!!!

Picture Book

Regular blog followers will remember my first show at the John Cleary Gallery a couple of months ago with artist Keliy Anderson-Staley (or perhaps you might remember the Cookie Baking Fiasco of 2011).  At any rate, I received an email from Keliy letting me know about a really cool project she is working on and I thought I would share it with you all!

(So for some reason the embedding of the video isn’t quite working.  Click on the link in the box or below and watch the video!)

Now… I am a huuuuge fan of supporting the arts (in fact, I can often be found on the street with my hand out and a sandwich board with SUPPORT THE ARTS on it).  I think this is a fantastic—and extremely reasonably priced—way to not only help fund a fascinating project but get some really great and unique art work in return.  I got a wonderful thank you note from Keliy after the show and I love it so much I’m going to frame it and put it up in my house!

For the official website and donation options check out the Kickstarter page here, and ahorn magazine has a wonderful interview with Keliy about the project here.

As a bit of a side note, if you are a regular blog follower then you know I don’t regularly (if ever) put out these kind of requests.  However, I am a big fan of Keliy and her work and think this is a very smart way to support the arts AND have a tangible reminder of what a philanthropic, sophisticated, thoughtful person you are!

A Night Like This

This past Saturday at the John Cleary Gallery I worked my first opening night reception, celebrating the Houston premiere of Keliy Anderson-Staley’s Imagined Family Heirlooms.

Response was enthusiastic to Keliy’s work, which includes a wide range of photographic techniques as well as the incorporation of found objects into the exhibit.

Patrons were also treated to milk (white Russians) and cookies, inspired by the artists Baking Pan Series and served by the gallery’s in-house bartender/baker/husband of the director, Arnaud Couturier.

Remember… milk makes your bones GROOOOWWW!!!

Keliy, Catherine and I would like to offer a warm thanks to all who attended and made this exhibit opening a great success!

The Cookie Factory

In preparation for Keliy Anderson-Staley’s Imagined Family Heirlooms, Catherine and I decided to have a “theme” to go along with the drinks and snacks for the opening.  Inspired by Keliy’s Baking Pan Series we instantly thought of milk and cookies!

So instead of spending a Friday night out on the town, I attempted to make three different batches of cookies: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and snickerdoodle. Monica also made a surprise guest appearance to help me out with some of the baking.  Some of you may remember her from my first outing to the John Cleary Gallery oh so many months ago! Let’s see how that turned out, shall we?

So much for homemade… besides, I’ve realized I’m more of an Ansel Adams wannabe than a Martha Stewart anyway!

Looking forward to seeing you all at the opening tomorrow, Saturday March 26 between 6 and 8pm! Come for the chocolate chips and stay for the fabulous photography.  (Well, and the white Russians certainly can’t hurt either)

Selections waiting for placement. PICK ME, PICK ME!!

Imagined Family Heirlooms harkens back to the rootless nature of the American identity, with many individuals unable to place family histories back more than one or two generations. This series of installations, comprised of both found and newly-made objects alike, suggests those photographs and sentimental objects one might have collected over the years. Domesticity in a wide range of connotations plays a central part in her works, as is evident in the use of rusted baking pans as a unifying visual motif.

As is the nature of the beast, we are sad to see Renate Aller’s One View, Ten Years exhibit coming to a close but simultaneously thrilled to welcome Keliy to her first solo show here at the gallery!

Please join us for the opening this weekend or stop by anytime during the next month to see the exhibit or peruse our other selections.

Long Time Ago

One of my responsibilities at the gallery is to maintain the John Cleary blog and make announcements for upcoming shows.  So, in a little bit of cross-bloggery promotion I thought I would extend an invitation to our next opening!

Please join us Saturday, March 26, from 6 – 8 p.m. for the opening of Keliy Anderson-Staley: Imagined Family Heirlooms. The exhibition will run through Saturday, April 23. The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception.
